Studio Ghibli’s next film has a release date on HBO Max – and it’s soon

Studio Ghibli Inc. (Japanese: 株式会社 ス タ ジ オ ジ ブ リ, Hepburn: Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Jiburi) is a Japanese animation studio headquartered in Koganei, Tokyo. This studio is best known for its animated feature films and has also produced several short films, TV commercials, and a TV series. The studio’s most recognizable mascot and emblem are Totoro, a giant cat-like spirit from the studio’s 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro. Studio Ghibli’s highest-grossing films include Spirited Away (2001), Ponyo (2008), and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). The studio was established on June 15, 1985, by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, following the success of the animated film Topcraft Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984). Studio Ghibli has also partnered with video game studios to develop images of several video games.
Recently, Studio Ghibli’s decided to produce Earwig and the Witch – its first CG movie, release plan for the US market, and it has HBO Max’s participation.
Goro Miyazaki is directing the anime as the studio’s first full-3D 3D feature, and his father and studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is credited for planning and developing the film. Yukinori Nakamura (“Boro the Caterpillar” of the Ghibli Museum, Expulsion from Heaven) will oversee the CG section and Tan Seri will take on the role of an animation director. Yuhki Takeuchi is working on the background. Satoshi Takebe (From Up On Poppy Hill, Ronja the Robber’s Daughter) is composing the music, Koji Kasamatsu is directing the sound and Eriko Kimura is directing the recording of the dialogue. Kentarō Morishita is producing the animation, and Isao Yoshikuni, Keisuke Tsuchihashi, and Koji Hoshino are the production directors.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, both the English dub and subtitle versions of the animated series will have a limited release in theaters on February 3, 2021 before reaching HBO Max just two days later. on February 5th. You can sign up for the service on the website.
Since HBO Max is currently the host of Studio Ghibli’s entire portfolio in the US, from Spirited Away to Porco Rosso, it’s not entirely surprising that the studio’s new film will also be streamed there.
That’s a sizeable boon to the streaming service, however, recently announced that they are also adding two Ghibli documentaries, Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki and The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, into my library.
A film of firsts
Earwig and the Witch was Studio Ghibli’s first feature film since Marnie Was There was released in 2014 and this is the studio’s first full 3D CG film. Gorō Miyazaki, son of co-founder Hayao Miyazaki and director of From Up on Poppy Hill and Tales From Earthsea, is directing the film.
Like Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle, Earwig and the Witch is based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones and will follow Earwig, a 10-year-old girl who grew up in an orphanage without knowing her mother has strange powers. Her life begins to change when she is adopted by a strange couple and has to live with a selfish witch.
The story of Earwig and the Witch is summarized as follows:
Not all orphans like to live in St. John’s Children’s Homes. Morwell, but Earwig liked it. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants, and it’s been like that ever since she crashed on the doorstep of the orphanage when she was a kid. But all that changed the day Bella Yaga and Mandrake arrived in St. Petersburg. Morwell’s, disguised as adoptive parents. Earwigs were brought to their mysterious home filled with invisible rooms, potions, and spells, with magic everywhere. Most kids would fear running from such a house. . . but not Earwig. With her intelligence – with a lot of help from a talking cat – she decided to show the witch who was her boss.
Unfortunately, a UK release schedule for the film is still unknown, although Deadline reported back in December of last year that it was selected by the Elysian Film Group. Hopefully, we will hear more about that soon.
